Justin Behrendt, a.k.a BongoJust is a percussionist and drummer, born in South Africa and based in the beautiful province of Mpumalanga.

Justin’s career as a musician spans 15 years and includes numerous high profile live performances both locally and internationally, as well as extensive coaching and teaching.

Below is a brief overview of his career, his experience in the national and international arena as well as his career high lights which include performances as part of a band, collaborations with DJs and the performance of his drumming students at national events.

Live Band performances

​

Justin has enjoyed several high profile live stage performances on percussion as the opening act for accomplished artists like Ali Campbell (UB40), Mango Groove, Prime Circle and Freshly Ground.

​

Always keen for touring and experiencing the energy of a live performance, Justin has relished the several band tours through South Africa, Mozambique and Mauritius as part of a band.

​

He has also appeared on live television though his performance on local television series SA’s Got Talent with band SYNCHROMESH. While touring Mauritius in 2017, several live tracks were broadcast on Mauritius’ Radio 1.

Live Collaboration with DJs

​

As the resident percussion player with House DJs at Nikki Beach Resort, Koh Samui, Justin further developed his passion for electronic music. He has since also regularly performed in collaboration with DJs in Mauritius and South Africa (e.g. Crater Gathering 2019).

​

In addition to this, he also enjoys toning it down to perform with singers, violinists and other instrumentalists to set a unique mood for weddings and corporate functions.

Coaching & Teaching

​

Justin has over 10 years’ experience teaching drumming and djembe drumming at two prestigious private schools in South Africa. He also regularly facilitates djembe drumming groups for team building experiences.

Career high lights

• Entertaining an international audience at resorts and events in Thailand, Mauritius, South African and Mozambique from 2008

• Opening acts for Ali Campbell in 2012

• Djembe drumming students opened for The Parlotones at South African National Arts Festival (Innibos Arts Festival) in 2018

• National exposure via SAs got Talent and Battle of the Bands in 2009

• Live percussion performance for national sport match at national stadium (Rugby)

Justin is an extremely adaptable musician that can add depth through his percussion to a wide range of music and across genres. He is a skilled djembe, bongo, conga player as well as drummer in rock, pop, reggae, funk and dance.
